In the recent past it has become "fashionable" to refer to various groups of people as "The Greek Community in Australia," or "The Vietnamese Community in Australia", or whatever ethnic group was the origin of the respective people. I personally take issue with such references. I myself was born in Italy and came to Australia as a child. I read on someone's website, when referring to me, the following incorrect comment, "Eddie was born in Italy and now lives in Australia, he is now an Italian/Australian" Sorry you are wrong! Yes, I am proud of my heritage, but I live in Australia and have no desire to live anywhere else. I have taken Australian Citizenship, and I have served both my country and my community, firstly in the Army and then as a Police Officer. I am Australian. Nothing irritates me more than seeing a group purporting to represent one or other of the various ethnic communities in Australia, marching in protest at some political problem in their respective country of their birth. I simply say this, if you want an input into the political climate of your country of birth, then live there.
Don't come to Australia, and enjoy all the freedoms we have (that have been paid for by the blood sweat and tears of past generations), the high standard of living we have and the rights you enjoy. Many of you live here for years and years and never even accept Australian Citizenship. Be proud to live here and become one of us, don't lose your heritage but look to the future for yourselves and your children. Australia has much to offer you but I do honestly believe that if you cannot accept Citizenship, then you should seriously consider returning to where you came from. There should never be such a thing as a divided ethnic community, we are one country, we are one nation and we are proud to be so.
This is not intolerance, it is simply stating - If you are going to make Australia your country then be proud enough to show it.
In conclusion I will borrow a line that is currently being used in the United States Of America, in a bid to change their Constitution, so a former Hollywood actor now politician, can one day run for Presidency of the U.S.A. It suits me perfectly.
"You cannot choose the country of your birth, but you can choose the country you love."
