Map of Norfolk Island

Norfolk Island is the third of Australia's self governing Territories and is administered by a Chief Minister.  It does not have a Police Force, but is under Australian law, and policed by Australian Federal Police.

It is situated in the South Pacific Ocean approximately 1,600 kilometres (994 miles) North East of Sydney, 900 kilometres (559 miles) North East of Lord Howe Island, and 1,100 kilometres (684 miles) North West of Auckland (New Zealand).  The island is about 8 kilometres (5 miles) long and 5 kilometres (3.1 miles) wide.  The overall area of Norfolk Island is about 34.6 square kilometres (13.3 square miles).  Most of the 32 kilometre (20 mile) coastline consists of almost inaccessible cliffs, but in one small area in the South the land slopes down to Sydney Bay, where the capital Kingston is located.  The highest point on the island is Mount Bates which is 319 metres (1,046 feet) in height.

The mainstay of the island is tourism and the export of the Norfolk Island pine seeds. Kentia Palm seeds, and poultry products.

It is the only other Territory (along with the Northern Territory and the Australian Capital Territory) to have its own flag.   All other Territories fly the Australian National Flag.

An interesting thing to note is that unlike the States, none of the Territories have a blue background or the British Union Jack on the top left corner of their respective flags.

Christmas Island has long been a destination for those who attempt to smuggle people into Australia illegally.

Mawson Base,
Australian Antarctic Territory

This photograph taken by Web Cam on Monday 19th September 2005. It shows that at that time (10.36 am) the wind was blowing from the East at 31 kilometres (19.5 miles) per hour.  The temperature was Minus 9.9 Degrees Centigrade (about 17.8 Degrees Fahrenheit)

The Australian Antarctic Territory was first claimed in 1936, but there have been many international treaties regarding the Antarctic Continent since then.

Australian Territory in Antarctica is on the Eastern side, and is made up of an area South of 60 degrees South Latitude, between 45 degrees and 160 degrees East Longitude.  The total area administered by the Australian Antarctic Division is about 6,100,00 square kilometres (2,350,000 square miles).

Australia has permanent scientific stations situated at Mawson and Davis, with other bases at Casey and Macquarie Island, and other expeditions are undertaken from time to time.

Another thing that is becoming more and more popular is for tourists to take a flight over Antarctica by chartered commercial airliner.

Other Territories

In addition to those listed above, Australia also has responsibilities for other Territories, some of which are :-

(1) Ashmore Reef - The Territory of Ashmore Reef comprises of West, Middle and East Islands of Ashmore Reef and also Cartier Island.  The islands are low, uninhabited and made up of mainly coral and sand.  They are located in the Indian Ocean about 320 kilometres (199 miles) off Australia's North West coast and 144 kilometres (89 miles) South of the Indonesian island of Roti.  The Territory includes the 12 nautical mile territorial sea, and the Jabiru and Challis oil fields are adjacent.
Ashmore Reef is another destination for those who attempt to smuggle people into Australia illegally.

(2) Jervis Bay Territory - The Jervis Bay Territory comprises about 7.4 square kilometres (2.9 square miles), on the shores of Jervis Bay, which is about 200 kilometres (124 miles) South of Sydney by road.

(3) Coral Sea Islands Territory - Established in 1969 and is made up of islands situated in an area of about 780,000 square kilometres (301,158 square miles) of the Coral Sea.  The majority of the islands are small and only have light vegetation and no fresh water supplies.
Only Willis Island is inhabited, with four Meteorological Bureau staff.  Several other islands have unmanned weather station beacons and a lighthouse.
The original Act of 1969 was amended in 1997 to extend the boundaries of the Coral Sea Islands Territory around Elizabeth and Middletown Reefs, which are 150 kilometres (93 miles) North of Lord Howe Island in the Tasman Sea.

Other than the Northern Territory, all other Territories come under Australian Federal Law.  Appointments regarding the administration of these Territories are made by the Australian Federal Government.
