Outback
I'm in the land Down Under,
And a'way outback,
As I make my way so slowly,
Along that dusty track.
For there are no paved roads,
Where I do tread,
As I search for work,
To earn my daily bread.
Have no idea,
Where I'm going to go,
Because to work the land,
Is the only thing I know.
I've shorn some sheep,
And milked some cows,
Because way back then,
I was just taught how.
There was work a plenty,
For the likes of me,
And my general life,
Did feel so free.
But times have changed,
And it's all machines,
In all those places,
Where men had been.
So to the land,
I have to say goodbye,
Head for the city,
And my luck do try.
So many people,
I then do see,
But none do stop,
And say hello to me.
There's so much traffic,
Upon the street,
And rushing crowds,
Make me move my feet.
I'm not used to this,
For my life was slow,
I took my time,
When I had to go.
So I turn around,
And head back again,
To join once more,
Those outback men.
I'd rather sit,
By a creek that's dry,
And just watch life,
As it passes by.
See the birds,
Sit in the tree,
Makes me feel Australian,
That's what I want to be.
If I should stay,
As I should do,
I'm bound to share,
With a kangaroo.
Or perhaps instead,
Of the kangaroos,
Across the plains,
I'll see emus.
For they to,
Do live outback,
As they race beside,
That dusty track.
So there's not much work,
Little to be done,
But life outback,
Will always be my home.
And to live out here,
Is what I want to do,
Because I'm Australian,
Through and through.
