When I went to school I was taught many things. Among them were the masculine and feminine forms of various occupations.
A man was a Comedian; a woman was a Comedienne.
A man was an Aviator; a woman was an Aviatrix.
A man was an Actor; a woman was an Actress, and so on.
Suddenly along came political correctness. Everyone is now known by the masculine term. English by its very nature as a language is always changing, but that doesn't mean we have to agree with the change.
Personally, if I was a woman, and I was called an actor I would be offended. I would take great pride in being an actress because it shows that as a woman I have achieved something.
Political correctness has gone mad. This is no better illustrated than by a very clever writer, (I don't have the book so I can't give you their name, but I have read it) who wrote, "The Politically Correct Fairy Tales". For example the woodcutter in the tale of "Little Red Riding Hood" is no longer a woodcutter, he is now a "Solid Fuel Gatherer". Another example he gave, "Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs", have now become "Snow White And The Seven Vertically Challenged People."
I am partly deaf, so why call me hearing impaired? I am blind in one eye, so why call me vision impaired? I am simply partly deaf and partly blind. I do not feel impaired, I do not ask for any special privileges, I simply accept the things I have wrong with me.
Is this really the direction we want to go?
Let men be men and women be women and respect both for who they are and what they have achieved. I admire men and women who have stood out in their chosen fields, not because of the fact they are male or female, but because they have achieved.
